Midwifery

WHAT IS A MIDWIFE?

In Ontario, a midwife is a registered health care professional who provides primary care to women throughout pregnancy, labour and birth. Midwives also provide care to both the mother and baby during the six weeks following birth.

MIDWIFERY IN ONTARIO

Midwives have been regulated in Ontario since 1994. All of our midwives are Registered with the College of Midwives of Ontario (CMO), and the Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM). The CMO is our regulatory body, which means it sets out the standards and guidelines to our scope of practice which includes our educational requirements. Midwifery care is fully funded by the Ministry of Health. Ontario residents without OHIP do not pay for midwifery services either.

Make An Informed Choice

Midwives have a philosophy of care that views pregnancy and birth as healthy, normal life events, and view the woman as the primary decision-maker regarding her care. We are available to our clients for emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We provide clients with up to date information about all their health care options available to them. We also support our clients in being active participants in making choices that are right for themselves, the health of their baby and their families.

Midwives are able to support women to birth their babies either at home or in the hospital. Although the client is presented with the option of birthing at home, the decision is based on an assessment of their health as well as risk factors during pregnancy.

At our clinic, we work in a group practice providing our clients with complete care from early pregnancy to six weeks after delivery. This allows women the opportunity to get to know and feel comfortable with their care provider.
